for the founders of the Modern Olympic Games

Letter to the Editor

ON Friday both Jacques Rogge and Lord Coe claimed that London is the only city to have hosted the Olympics three times. In fact Athens has hosted Olympic Games, under the auspices of the IOC, in 1896, 1906, and 2004. Athens 1906 was recognised by the IOC against the wishes of Baron de Coubertin. It is particularly offensive that Rogge and Coe made the claim during the opening ceremony since the parade of the athletes by nation was an innovation of Athens 1906. The Olympians of that year deserve an apology.

Yours faithfully,
